What Does The Golden Age Of Broadway Mean For Musical Theatre?
If you look at the Broadway musicals of today, such as Nice Work If You Can Get It, it is evident that aspects of the Golden Age will forever be duplicated in current musicals, the structure of the scripts and scores, and the elements of choreography that flowed effortlessly through the productions will always be a part of what the Broadway musical is (Riddle 160-162). The artists of the Golden Age changed the face of the American musical forever and the theatre world is forever indebted to them for that. Unfortunately, a period like this will most likely never be repeated in American history. “This time period in the history of the Broadway musical was so unique and it is the kind of phenomenon that really can only happen once in lifetime. It is unfortunate that Broadway may never see a success like this again, but at least we were fortunate enough to have such an epic period in musical theatre history to look back on and admire its grand success” says Anthony Sullivan when looking back at the history of the American musical. The Golden Age was different and above the musicals that came before and after it because of a great combination of artistry, luck, and good timing. This combination is what landed the American musicals of the forties, fifties, and sixties in the history books forever.
