Meredith Wilson's new musical The Music Man was a musical that for the first time put together an all American plot, with quirky small town characters, family friendly yet catchy music, and lively dance numbers to create a successful concoction of musical theatre that audiences have delighted in since its original premiere. The story centers around a swindling traveling salesman with a heart of gold who travels to a small town to attempt to sell some phony band instruments to a group of kids and their parents. In the process of his well planned out scheme he accidentally falls in love with the uptight town librarian and is forced to reveal his swindling secrets. Their love holds true and is underscored by several beautiful songs that the couple share together. With a well thought out plot and beautifully orchestrated songs, this musical was an instant hit that could appeal to all audiences no matter the age. That is part of the reason that this musical is so wildly popular to this day and is still revived all over the country. (Mordenn)
